Life After Death
Growing up with a father who was an Episcopal priest and the head of the Spiritual Care department at the local hospital, death was part of my Dad’s everyday life at work. He even taught death and dying at the med school. My Dad told me that, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed when I was four years old, I started asking questions about death, and life after death, and never stopped.
He would tell me about the Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) that his patients had (of course leaving out anything that would identify them). We spent hours talking about how often his patients, who were close to death, could not always tell if they were dead or alive. He also told me about the unexplained things they saw when they were clinically dead, or close to death – and not coming back. There were also the stories of patients who came back and visited various hospital staff, including my Dad, to let them know they were safe, healthy and happy in Heaven.
Coupled with those early experiences, as I was growing up, I lost close to 20 friends who died from various circumstances. I kept wanting to know and understand more about what happens to us after we die. I read LOTS of books and had many discussions with my Dad.
When I was in my 20s, I developed severe anaphylaxis to a number of things. We were at a family gathering to celebrate my grandmother’s 93rd birthday and I had a severe reaction to something, which caused me to leave my body. I can tell you that in those few seconds when I was outside of my body, I felt more alive and vibrant than I have ever felt before or after. The EMTs got there and pulled me back but the memory of what it felt like has never left me. As my parents and Aunt Esther aged, I again needed the comfort of learning and books just to know more about life after death.
If you are like me, and you are searching for answers about where your Loved One is going when they die, I want you to know that you are not crazy or strange to want to learn and understand more about this subject.
I have created this section — Exploring Life After Death on my website to give you a place to start should you be experiencing the same questions that I did. I am including all the books that I have read that have helped me understand more of what may be. I personally believe that Reincarnation is a strong possibility but understand that many religions do not agree or endorse that viewpoint.
I mean no disrespect if you do not believe in reincarnation.
However, I do believe in giving people the opportunity to read and learn and make their own decisions about what resonates and feels like truth to them. I am not stating one way is right and the other viewpoints are wrong. I believe that there are many possibilities, and we won’t know what it is like, or what the answer is until we, ourselves die.
Meanwhile, I urge you to trust your gut above all else. Go with whatever feels right in your heart and deep in your bones. No one should ever be able to sway you from what you know or believe is your truth. If you read these books and do this inner work, give yourself lots of time and space to process all that you are reading. You will likely be like me and agree with some of what these sources are saying but not all of it.
Lastly, If you get “spooked out”, know that it’s OK. Reading about what is unknown can be scary even if you are okay with the idea. Take some time off, read another subject for a while and say your favorite prayers. And if you get a strong message of “NO – Stop” and it more than your curiosity then let it go until you again feel called to take a look again. Respect the boundaries that your body/ mind and soul communicate to you. If you feel “NO” then stop. Don’t feel badly or apologize, it just means that investigating these things is not right for you at this time, and God or the Angels are letting you know.
While you are learning about this subject, it’s important to note that many people are not able to broach this subject because of their own issues, and fears. While it may be fascinating, exciting and helpful to you as you are going through preparing for your Loved One to die, please tread lightly with others in your family or group and be respectful of whatever place they are in spiritually. Remember – we want to approach every person and every situation with Love and understanding of where they are in their journey of asking questions. Meanwhile read and learn to your heart’s content!
As always – if you have any books, movies, documentaries, or other resources that have been helpful to you in your search to understand what comes next please share them with me so we can potentially add them to the collection. Just email them to me at lili@muchlovelili.com
Much Love, Lili
